When to keep your child home, injury care, and medication rules
Effective: September 2026 | Reviewed Annually
At Country Lane Early Learning, the health, safety, and well-being of every child is our highest priority. The following policies are designed to help maintain a healthy environment for all children while ensuring proper care, communication, and safe practices throughout the program, consistent with Utah childcare licensing health and infection control standards (R430-90-15).
Wellness Policy
Parents are asked to use their best judgment and keep children home when they are sick or unable to comfortably participate in daily activities.
If a child becomes ill during the day, develops a concerning rash, or shows symptoms of illness, parents or emergency contacts will be notified for prompt pick-up.
Children who become ill while in care will be separated from the group when appropriate and cared for in a calm, comforting environment until they are picked up.
Parents or emergency contacts are expected to arrive within one hour of notification whenever possible.
Children May Be Sent Home For
Fever of 101°F or higher. Children must remain fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning.
Vomiting or diarrhea. Children may return after being symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
Unknown rash or skin condition that may be contagious. A physician's note may be required before returning to care.
Persistent coughing, severe congestion, excessive runny nose, or symptoms that interfere with normal participation.
Excessive crying, unusual irritability, fatigue, inability to be comforted, refusal to eat or drink, or requiring one-on-one care.
Contagious conditions such as head lice, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, chickenpox, strep throat, conjunctivitis (pink eye), impetigo, pinworms, E. coli, or other communicable illnesses.
Children diagnosed with contagious illnesses must follow physician recommendations and applicable exclusion guidelines before returning.
If a child is too ill to participate in outdoor play or regular classroom activities, they are too ill to attend childcare.
Injury Policy
Minor bumps, scrapes, and scratches may occasionally occur despite close supervision and safety precautions.
Staff make every effort to maintain a safe environment through active supervision, childproofing, and safe play practices.
A Minor Incident Report will be completed for injuries requiring documentation, and a copy will be provided to parents.
In the event of a serious injury or medical emergency, emergency medical services may be contacted immediately.
If necessary, children may be transported to the nearest emergency medical facility while parents are notified as quickly as possible.
Parents are responsible for any medical expenses, emergency transportation costs, or related healthcare fees.
Families will be notified whenever an emergency substitute caregiver is needed due to illness, family emergency, or unforeseen circumstances.
While every reasonable precaution is taken to provide a safe environment, Country Lane Early Learning cannot guarantee that accidental injuries or illnesses will never occur while children are in care, on the premises, or participating in supervised activities.
Medication Policy
Prescription and non-prescription medications, ointments, and creams may be administered when medically necessary and accompanied by written parent authorization.
All medications must be in their original container and clearly labeled with the child's name.
Prescription medications must include the pharmacy label with dosage instructions and prescribing physician information.
Over-the-counter medications must include written parent instructions and may require physician authorization when applicable.
Medication will only be administered according to labeled directions or physician instructions.
All medications will be stored safely and out of reach of children.
Parents are encouraged to notify the provider of any medication changes, allergies, or health concerns that may affect their child while in care.
