Spring Home Learning Activities

As the weather warms up, the outdoors becomes one big classroom. These activities take learning outside and connect classroom skills to the natural world.
Backyard Bug & Shape Hunt
Head outside together and look for small bugs — ants, ladybugs, roly-polies — while also searching for things shaped like circles, squares, and triangles, like a round leaf, a square paving stone, or a triangular roofline.
What They're Learning: Shape recognition in the everyday world, early observation and classification skills used in science, and vocabulary for the natural world.
Letter Planting
Write your child's first initial on a few small cups, fill them with soil, and plant a fast-growing seed like a bean or sunflower. Water them together each day and watch for the first sprout.
What They're Learning: Letter recognition tied to something personally meaningful — their own name — an introduction to plant life cycles and cause and effect, and patience and responsibility through daily care.
Rainbow Color Walk
Take a walk around the neighborhood and try to spot something for every color of the rainbow — a red stop sign, a yellow flower, a blue car.
What They're Learning: Color recognition and naming, visual scanning and attention skills, and gross motor practice through walking.
Counting Flowers
Pick a few flowers, or find them growing outside, and count the petals together one by one.
What They're Learning: One-to-one counting, fine motor control as little fingers touch each petal, and an early introduction to patterns found in nature.
